Here it is folks, the official Panel Swap number 5.

- The theme is FAMOUS QUOTES.(Or a little less famous, if it's a really cool one). [Wink] The rules will be similar to the last swap. I won't be pairing names together beforehand, only as the pictures come to me. You actually don't even have to sign up, just make a panel, take a picture of it, and send the picture to me. Signing up would be great, and if you've decided at the time, you can post the quote you're thinking of using. You may use the same quote that someone else is using, it would be interesting to see two or more approaches to the same quote. Deadline for completion is Thursday, October 13, 2005 (@2pm [Razz] ). The reasons for the long time 1: I myself might have to spend some time in the research and design department, just to figure out exactly what it is I want to do. 2: This is the outdoor time of year, and people may be travelling, etc. 3: I've got a bunch-bunch-bunch of other things I also need to be doing, and I don't anticipate extending the deadline. Say it again: I don't anticipate extending the deadline. The extension is built in. 4 months sounds like a long time, but you know how that goes. I'm reminded of the scene from Monty Python's "Search For the Holy Grail", where the two guards are conversing casually while their attacker is across the meadow. The deadline is across the meadow. Now is the time to start on this project. Maybe halfway toward the deadline, if you people are really nice [I Don t Know] , and really lucky [Razz] , I'll tell you a true story that happened to me, that I call "Get in or Get Out". There isn't a hard fast rule about the nature of the quote you choose. I myself along with every other participant, with have to risk getting a risque panel. I started discussing this on another thread, but it appears that the benefits gained vs the effort I would have to expend wouldn't be worth making that sort of rule. I do have some thoughts on the matter, which I'll share below. I will make at least one panel, and it will be swapped with the last panel to come in before the deadline, if I need to even up the number. All e-mail contact with me regarding this swap should be sent to: panelswap5@hotmail.com When you complete a panel, and take a picture, do not send it to that address, another address will be sent to you. Dave Parr has graciously offered the use of his web site, so they may be posted there for awhile. Thanks Dave. Also, the above art work is rendered as a vector file. If there's an interest, participants will receive a copy of it. I wish I could send everyone an aluminum sign with that on it, but "we'll see". Here are some of my thoughts and admonishments: As I said before, choose a quote that will inspire people to wisdom, selflessness, integrity, and will fit anybody's image. I myself would prefer to quote the bible, but I know that some people wouldn't cherish that on a panel, so I won't. try best as you can to make the quote warm and positive, but that sometimes will be on the edge. For instance, I will be hard pressed to find one I like more than:"The unexamined life is not worth living" (Socrates?) Not exactly warm and fuzzy, but so important. These panels may end up in a sign showroom, or a living room. Imagine that you're making a panel that will be displayed in the most prominent, prestigious corporate offices. Aim higher, not lower. Push yourself beyond your limits. This isn't just a chance to make and get a cool looking panel, it's an opportunity to learn something new. And more than likely, others will learn from what you've done. I spent some time looking at pictures from previous swaps, and they were amazing. One thing I saw time and again were extraordinary designs. They were just that, beyond the ordinary job a customer would order. This is total design freedom, and I'm hoping it will be like the major automobile makers that have a race team. What we learn on the 'panel track', will help us in everyday business. So aim high. This is about communication, not only letters, but illustration and stripes. Part of a message can be so subtle that is noticed only be those studying the work, another part so loud it jumps off the panel. So go for it! Remember the thread started by Cam, where he was asking what will people think a hundred years from now, if they find some of these panels? This could be part of our legacy as letterheads.
